Suga T: Two Albums, One Legacy
A Bay Area pioneer who helped shape the legacy of women in hip-hop, Suga T is back with a double album release featuring Auntie Cutting Up and Bay West. Bringing Southern soul and grown folks energy to the table, the veteran artist is opening a new chapter while staying connected to the roots that helped define her sound.
If you haven’t heard of Suga T, let’s take a trip down memory lane.
Born Tenina Stevens, Suga T’s musical identity reflects the culture and influence of Northern California. She began her journey with the family-led rap group The Click, alongside her brother E-40, D-Shot, and cousin B-Legit. With releases including “Down and Dirty” in 1992, the group helped put Vallejo on the West Coast hip-hop map. From there, Suga T expanded beyond the group, pursuing a solo career with releases including “It’s All Good” in 1993 and “Paper Chasin’.” Over the years, she has continued building her catalog while exploring other creative avenues, including acting, motivational speaking, and entrepreneurship.
Now, Suga T is bringing that experience back to the music with two new projects that reflect her continued evolution as an artist. Featuring appearances from Mac Mall, Black C, Afroman, and Earl the Pearl Stevens, the releases connect her Bay Area roots with a new chapter in her career. Tracks like “Game Goofy” and “JOB” also speak to the kind of messaging listeners continue to value: motivation, relatable lyrics, and music that can connect with audiences across generations. For Suga T, the return is about more than releasing new music. It is another opportunity to share her perspective, celebrate her legacy, and remind listeners that her story is still being written.
Her work extends beyond music. Suga T appeared in the 2003 comedy film Malibooty!, playing Alicia alongside a cast that included Brian Hooks. She has also used her platform to support women’s empowerment, youth development, autism awareness, and community wellness. Through her Sprinkle Me Social Enterprise, she continues to emphasize community impact, knowledge sharing, and opportunities for others.
